The village of Calstock is rather picturesquely nestled next to the River Tamar at the bottom of a hill. On top of the hill is the Calstock Parish church which is the last resting place for a number of Harris and Joll family members. The River Tamar is at times the boundary between Cornwall and Devon. The whitewashed buildings shown are typical of the construction of houses in the village.

The surrounding area is what I would call modern rural. Still a lot of pasture but quite a high density of housing as well. This is quite common of the South of England. It's also a little dangerous for the rambler as there a large number of old mine shafts, a reminder of the area's extensive mining past.
